McQuillin One-Hits Beavers in Run-Rule Victory

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Tenth-ranked Arizona softball was dominant in all three phases of the game, using a Taylor McQuillin one-hitter and an offensive explosion to take game 1 over Oregon State, 9-0, in five innings at Hillenbrand Stadium on Friday night.

McQuillin tied the NCAA lead with her 10th shutout of the season, allowing just one hit, a fourth-inning single to right field. She struck out two and walked one in the victory while improving to 21-9 on the season.

McQuillin's offense supported her in kind. Arizona scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, six of which came with two out, to break the game open.

Overall, UA scored nine runs on 10 hits. Dejah Mulipola and Aleah Craighton hit home runs for the Wildcats in the contest. Seven Wildcats recorded hits in the game, including two-hit games from Reyna Carranco, Craighton and Ivy Davis. The Cats got RBI from Alyssa Palomino (2), Craighton (2), Harper (1), Malia Martinez (1), Mulipola (1) and Davis (1).

The victory was Arizona's first mercy win in Pac-12 play this year. Overall, UA improved to 33-13, 9-10 Pac-12 while Oregon State dropped to 26-10, 7-9 Pac-12. Arizona will try to clinch the series on Saturday in game 2 at 6 p.m. at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Two throwing errors by the Oregon State shortstop gave Arizona a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, before Mulipola doubled the lead with a home run to lead off the second.

In the third, UA appeared poised to break open the game; the Cats loaded the bases with no one out for the middle of its order. Oregon State starter Mariah Mazon retired the next three Wildcats to strand the bases loaded.

Craighton led off the bottom of the fourth inning with her seventh home run of the season, a shot to left. It would be the first of seven runs and seven hits in the inning for the Cats. The next six runs all scored with two out on RBI hits from Palomino, Harper, Martinez, Craighton and Davis.

Up next: Arizona and Oregon State continue their three-game series at Saturday at 6 p.m. at Hillenbrand Stadium.
