Tucson, Ariz. – The University of Arizona track and field program hosted the Jim Click Multis on Thursday, Feb 5th. Competing for the Cats in day one of the combined events were freshman
Dominic Gehr and senior
Alyssa Thompson.
"It was a great first day of the Jim Click Shootout," said head track and field coach
Fred Harvey. "It is really nice to have all of these programs out from around the country. It was really nice to see
Dominic Gehr get his first start as a collegiate in the decathlon. I thought he competed really well all the way through. He ran a PR in the 100-meters and the long jump. I thought he ran really well in the 400, right off his PR. He was very competitive and had a good start for a freshman.
Alyssa Thompson, I believe she is on her way to a personal best. The hurdle race was better than she has run all year, but she has more in her in that respect. She kept herself in it in the high jump and I thought she ran a really nice 200-meters to close out the day. Her best events are going to come tomorrow and I believe we will see a PR for her here in this multi."
Gehr concluded day one of the competition with a score of 3,482 points and will be in fourth place going into the final day of the decathlon. Thompson amassed 3,241 points on day one of the heptathlon and will go into day two in fifth place.
Gehr's day was highlighted by a second place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 1.95m, good for 758 points.
A third place finish in the 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 24.68 to score 916 points, highlighted Thompson's day.
Gehr and Thompson will continue competition tomorrow at Roy P. Drachman Stadium at 10 a.m. MST.
