TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona senior Emma Gates will compete on the world stage tomorrow at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. She begins her competition in the women's high jump qualification round on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 3:15 a.m. MST (7:15 p.m. local time in Tokyo).
Gates is entered in Group B, jumping 16th in the order. Athletes who clear the automatic qualifying mark of 1.97m (Q) or finish among the top 12 performers overall will advance to the final on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2:30 p.m. MST (6:30 a.m. Tokyo time on Sept. 21).
The Wildcats standout enters after a breakout summer that included a third-place finish at the U.S. Championships with a personal-best clearance of 1.91m (6-3¼).
The world record stands at 2.10m (Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Ukraine), while the Championship record is 2.09m (Stefka Kostadinova, Bulgaria).
