Play Suspended Due to Darkness at Western Intercollegiate
04/07/2018 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- The first day of the Western Intercollegiate came to a close early as play was suspended due to darkness in the second round. Arizona finished the day in 9th place, with a score of 362 (+9). Senior George Cunningham led the pack ending the day in a tie for first place.
"We have a good afternoon round going and need to finish it off with a few birdies," commented head coach Jim Anderson. "The scoreboard doesn't reflect a few mistakes and we are going to need to be sharp in Round 3. We challenged the back end of our lineup to bring a great attitude and mindset for tomorrow because we have some solid play at the top including George's rounds. He was awesome today and as good as it was, he didn't even have everything come easy today. Tomorrow will be a great opportunity for our team."
Cunningham established his lead early on in the first round, scoring a 66, his second lowest 18-hole of the season. The Tucson local ranked in the top five in par 3, par 4, and par 5 scoring. Cunningham notched eight birdies and an eagle to put him at seven under going into the completion of the second round. Cunningham recently earned his Mackenzie-PGA Tour Canada card.
"I'm taking my momentum off of my Canadian Tour qualifier last week and keeping the good play rolling!" commented Cunningham. "I was tired today from the last week but was able to focus on my golf today and I managed a really good round! Tomorrow, I'll just continue with the same game plan and continue the good play."
Sophomore David Laskin had a first round score of 73 (+3), and will continue the second round tomorrow three under, tied in 2st. Freshman Trevor Werbylo is currently tied in 28th, with a first round score of 74 (+4), and being three under in the second.
Sophomore Brad Reeves finishes the day in a tie for 58th, coming off of a first round score of 71 (+1), and is four over on the second round. Sophomore Briggs Duce is tied in 68th, and is one under in the second, where he had an eagle on hole 9 par 5. Junior Travis Fredborg will enter the last day of competition in 93rd (+16).
The second round will resume tomorrow morning and then the final round will begin immediately after the completion of the second.
