SACRAMENTO, Calif. --The Arizona Wildcats hit three home runs Monday night and topped Sacramento State 5-2 at John Smith Field.
The Cats secured their third-straight 30-win season under third-year coach
Jay Johnson with the victory. Arizona improved to 30-20 on the season, while Sacramento State dropped to 28-23 on the season.
Coach
Jay Johnson's club has now won 15 straight nonconference games this season and improved its midweek record to 10-1 on the season.The Cats closed out their nonconference portion of the schedule this season with a 20-6 record and a nonconference RPI of 15.
Nick Quintana got the Wildcats on the board in the second inning with a solo home run. The sophomore third baseman worked the count full and then blasted his 12
th home run of the season off Sacramento State's Ty Fox to give Arizona a 1-0 lead. Quintana's homer went on the fifth level of the parking structure past the left field wall.
The Cats extended the lead in the next inning.
Cal Stevenson led off the inning with a single to put a man on base. After a strikeout,
Cameron Cannon hit his eighth home run of the season for a two-run shot to make it 3-0.
Sacramento State got one run back in the bottom half when Matt Smith blooped a single to left field with two outs to make it 3-1.
But Arizona wasted no time extending the lead again one inning later. In the fourth, shortstop
Jacob Blas led off the inning with a walk to put a man on for ninth-place hitter
Matt Fraizer. Fraizer attacked a 1-0 pitch from Travis Martizia and homered over the right field fence to give Arizona a 5-1 lead.
Senior right-hander
Zach Stone, who started for the Cats, tossed a perfect fourth inning, getting a pair of strikeouts. Stone exited after the fourth, tossing 66 total pitches. He allowed one run on three hits, while walking two and striking out three. He earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Arizona relied on its pitching from the fifth on.
Tylor Megill entered in the fifth and tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run. He exited with two men on and two outs in the seventh. Junior left-hander
Avery Weems came on to face James Outman. The lefty got Outman to ground out to Blas at second base to get out of the inning and keep it a three-run game.
Freshman
Zach Sherman then came on to pitch the final two innings. Sherman tossed two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks, while striking out three. He pitched a perfect eighth and worked around a leadoff single in the ninth. Sherman got Keith Torres to fly out to Fraizer in right for the final out of the game to lock down his first career save.
Quintana finished 2 for 3 in the win and increased his RBI total to 47 for the season. Cannon also now has 47 RBIs on the season after his two-run blast.
Arizona will now return home to Hi Corbett Field to host Arizona State for the final three home games of the season. Game No. 1 is set for Thursday at 6 p.m., on Pac-12 Network.
