TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 6 Stanford (14-1, 4-0 Pac-12) went up nine at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they took down the Arizona Wildcats (13-3, 3-2 Pac-12) 78-48 in McKale Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinal made things difficult for Arizona on the offensive end, forcing the Wildcats to 27% shooting. On the other end, Stanford made 44% of their shots including 13 three-pointers. Alanna Smith paced the Cardinal with 20 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks.
Aari McDonald had a tough time from the field tonight, but she still found a way to score 17 points and was just two rebounds shy of a double-double.
Sam Thomas finished the game with three three-pointers and
Lucia Alonso knocked a couple down as well.
Stanford got out to a 21-12 lead at the end of one thanks to some stifling defense as Arizona shot 24% in the first quarter. The second quarter is where things got tough for the Wildcats as they were only able to muster four points while Stanford shot 75% from the field, including 5-6 from three to win the quarter 23-4, giving the Cardinal a 44-16 lead at the half.
The Cardinal were able to cruise in the second half, playing more good defense and maintaining a comfortable lead. Arizona showed some fight in the fourth quarter winning 21-16, but it wasn't enough as Stanford won their fourth Pac-12 game of the season.
Next up for Arizona is the Oregon schools on the road starting with Oregon State on Friday, Jan. 18. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. MST.
