TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats will proudly honor Trevor Hoffman this season for his recent induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Hoffman's jersey will officially be retired when the Wildcats host UMass-Lowell on Opening Day at Hi Corbett Field on Feb. 15. Hoffman will be on hand for the jersey retirement and will take part in a pregame celebration, while throwing out the first pitch. In addition, the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a Trevor Hoffman Bobble Head. The Bobble Head will feature Hoffman in his No. 15 Arizona jersey.
Hoffman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July after an 18-year career as a dominant relief pitcher, mostly for the San Diego Padres. Hoffman totaled 601 saves in his career and was a seven-time All-Star.
Hoffman played for Arizona in 1988 and 1989 as a shortstop, before transitioning to the mound as a professional. He hit .371 as a junior in 1988 with 11 doubles and 45 RBI. In 1989, Hoffman hit .284 with 13 doubles, six home runs and 38 RBI and was named First-Team All-Pac-10 South, along with future major league players and coaches Scott Erickson, J.T. Snow, Kevin Long and Alan Zinter.
The former shortstop will become the second former Wildcat to officially have his jersey retired, joining Terry Francona. Francona met the criteria by winning the Golden Spikes Award in 1980. Hoffman became eligible by being inducted into the Hall of Fame last summer. Hoffman's jersey will join Francona's in right field on Opening Day.
Arizona will also recognize Hoffman on March 5 versus Michigan State when there will be a Trevor Hoffman trading card giveaway.
The Hoffman Bobble Head and trading card will be just two of several season-long promotions at Hi Corbett Field this spring.
