
GymCats Open 2019 Season on the Road at Central Michigan

TUCSON, Ariz. – After a preseason full of hard work and team building, Arizona Gymnastics is prepared to take on the 2019 season with a quad meet on Sunday, Jan. 6 against Central Michigan, Illinois, and Bridgeport.

"The team has worked very hard over the semester and we have achieved many milestones with our training," said head coach John Court. "Sunday will be another milestone as we transition into our competitive season. It's a quad meet, against three quality opponents and the format will allow us to stay together as a team throughout the meet, which will help our growth over the next few weeks."
Arizona welcomes back 11 returning gymnasts, including sophomores Payton Bellows, Sydney Freidin, Laura Leigh Horton, and Adra Parks, juniors Christina Berg, Courtney Cowles, Jenny Leung, Maddi Leydin, and Heather Swanson, and seniors Haylie Hendrickson and Danielle Spencer.
The GymCats will welcome four freshmen: Alivia Kendrick from Springboro, Ohio, Asia Rose DuVernay from Lansing Michigan, Kennedi Davis from Blue Springs, Missouri, and MacKinzie Kane from Tucson, Arizona.
Last season, the GymCats set a career-high team score of 49.525 on the balance beam against Arkansas.
Individually, the GymCats had strong competitors on all four events last season. Payton Bellows earned a season and career high of 9.950 on vault. Christina Berg and Courtney Cowles also helped the Cats by earning new career highs of 9.925 on uneven bars and balance beam, respectively. Maddi Leydin was a strong all-around competitor, earning a new season and career high of 39.200 against UCLA.
This season, the Cats will host five home meets during the season and will face Pac-12 rivals Washington, California, Utah, Oregon State, UCLA, and Stanford. The GymCats will also face Central Michigan, Illinois, Bridgeport, Arkansas, Texas Women's, North Carolina State, George Washington, and LSU this season.
