Cats Head East to Compete in New Mexico Classic

Tucson, Ariz. – The University of Arizona track and field program will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the 2019 New Mexico Classic. The two-day contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 1st at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

"This weekend in New Mexico should be a nice kickoff to the backend of the indoor season," said head track and field coach Fred Harvey. "We sat out a few athletes last week for training purposes. We feel like the push for the conference is in play. We look forward to watching Maksims (Sincukovs) and all of the hurdlers get back into competition mode and blend some of these relays together to build our momentum towards those top-16 NCAA spots that we need for the national championships. Looking at how folks performed last week, I think things are starting to gel as far as the program is concerned. It is never a finished product and we have to keep pushing every week and do the right things during the week to make sure the competition is coming up is in our favor.

Last Time Out: The Cats competed in the UW & Texas Tech Invitationals. Leading the Cats in Lubbock was sophomore Jordan Geist, who set the No. 3 shot put mark in the world with a toss of 20.78m. In Seattle, Carlos Villarreal clocked a time of 7:58.58 in his first collegiate 3K.

Making an entrance: Senior Na'Asha Robinson opened her Wildcat career at the Texas Tech Invitational last weekend, competing in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. The transfer clocked times of 23.90 and 54.17 to lead the lady Cats in both events.

2018 Was a Classic: In last year's New Mexico Classic, Karolina Pahlitzsch and Diana Gajda set top-3 marks in the NCAA in the 600-meter run. Pahlitzsch clocked a time of 1:29.76, good for first place in the contest. Pahlitzsch set the top NCAA mark, top New Mexico Classic mark, No. 2 collegiate facility mark, and the No. 14 mark in the world up to that point in time. Gajda came in second with a time of 1:30.30 to set the No. 3 NCAA at the time.

Quick Fuse: In the opening round of the 60-meter dash, Keishawn Everly improved his PR. The freshman registered a time of 6.89 in the short sprint.

Jumping High: Coach Blockburger's high jump specialists return to competition in New Mexico. The group of athletes all hold top-15 MPSF Conference marks. Lillian Lowe, Karla Teran, Alexa Porpaczy, Justin Lewis and Justice Summerset will kick off the New Mexico Classic at 4 p.m. MST on Friday.
