ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Arizona women's golf team heads to Atlanta next week for the East Lake Cup, one of the most prestigious collegiate golf tournaments. The East Lake cup is an annual tournament that features the four NCAA Championship semifinalists from the prior year.
Arizona will be returning for the second year in a row thanks to a win over USC in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship last year. The tournament spotlights some of the top collegiate players in the world, including Arizona's Vivian Hou, who is currently ranked 18th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Vivian has already recorded runner-up finishes at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate and the Stanford Intercollegiate this year. Her strong start to the season has earned her a spot on the ANNIKA Award Watchlist.
Senior Sandra Nordaas and sophomore Ya Chun Chang will be making the second East Lake appearance of their careers, and freshmen Gile Bite Starkute and Therese Warner will be making their first.
Junior Yu-Sang Hou will not be competing because she received a special invite to the LPGA Swinging Skirts tournament next week.
The tournament begins on Monday with the stroke play portion of the event. The teams will play one round to determine the East Lake Cup individual champion. Tuesday and Wednesday consist of the match-play championship. The seeding for match play will be determined by the teams' finishes in stroke play.
"We're super excited to be returning to the East Lake Cup," said head coach Laura Ianello. "It's a great honor to have finished in the semifinals at the national championship last year, punching our ticket to the East Lake Cup. It's wonderful to play at such a historical golf course, and the foundation that helps support the community there. It brings out the best golf having one round of stroke play and then match play. I know our ladies, especially Ya Chun and Sandra will be looking forward to competing again and hopefully winning the cup!"
