Warner Takes Third in Stroke Play, Cats Earn Second Seed for Match Play at East Lake Cup
10/28/2019 | Women's Golf
ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Arizona women's golf team battled its way to a second-place finish in stroke play on Monday, earning the No. 2 seed for match play tomorrow at the East Lake Cup in Atlanta.
Freshman Therese Warner was the low Wildcat, shooting 4-under on the back nine to post a 70 (-2) and end stroke play in solo third. Warner hit a lovely wedge to tap-in range on the 18th hole to close with a birdie. Fellow freshman Vivian Hou was around the lead for most of the day, and ended up in a tie for fourth at 1-under. Vivian has now shot under-par in eight of her ten rounds this year.
"I feel pretty good," said Warner. "I started off a little rough but towards the end, back nine, I started playing better so that's good. [It's] good momentum for the tournament coming up."
Sophomore Ya Chun Chang fired an even-par 72, putting her in a tie for sixth. Chang improved on her round from last year by six strokes. Freshman Gile Bite Starkute shot even-par on the front nine and finished with a round of 75 (+3). Senior Sandra Nordaas rounded out the team with a 77.
As a team, the Wildcats finished at even-par, two shots back of the Duke Blue Devils. Their performance earned them the No. 2 seed in match play tomorrow, and a date with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The winner of that matchup will compete against either Duke or Auburn in the finals.
"The ladies did extremely well, I'm really proud of them," said head coach Laura Ianello. "We had a few bogeys coming in that kind of cost us to lose by two to Duke. Going in as the second seed against the former national champions- and Wake is a respectable team, we get to compete against them tomorrow- overall, I saw a lot of good things. This golf course is extremely difficult and to shoot even par as a team, I was really proud of them."
Arizona tees off against Wake Forest at 9:45 a.m. MST on Tuesday. Live coverage on Golf Channel will once again begin at noon MST.
