TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona men's golf program concluded play at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni Tucson National in 8
th place. The team posted a score of 854, 15-under. Sophomore
Trevor Werbylo finished the tournament tied in fifth, for his sixth top ten finish this season.
Â
"We struggled this week," commented head coach
Jim Anderson. "Playing at home is often a huge advantage but I also think we applied different pressures for ourselves. Some of the pressure was internal from within our team and other stemmed from trying so hard to perform well in front of family and fans on a familiar course. We need to putt better and make more birdies. The season is long and there are ups and downs for a group. We will stay positive and get to work preparing for Stanford. The field is very large and there are opportunities to perform well again in just one short week."
Â
Werbylo, a Tucson local, played a strong three rounds of golf, where he broke a program record of strokes under par during his second round yesterday. The sophomore finished in the top five, 11-under par, among some of the most highly ranked amateur golfers in the world. Werbylo tabbed 17 birdies throughout the two-day tournament, the second most in the competition, and averaged a 4.25 on par-5 holes. His final score was 205, his career second-lowest tournament score.
Â
"Trevor was very strong again this week,"said Anderson. "He is trending in a great way and we know he will be in the winner's circle soon. Also, David and Ethan's performances were solid and they continue piling up strong finishes while they work to improve."
