TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats (13-7, 2-1) came out on top, 14-10, over the New Mexico State Aggies (15-5) in a battle of the nation's top two offenses on Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field.
Â
The two offenses entered the game first and second in the country in runs scored, runs per game, and on-base percentage while sporting a pair of top-four team batting averages. True to form, offense ruled the day as the two clubs combined for 24 runs on 25 hits.
Â
New Mexico State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Wildcats answered right back with runs in the first and second innings before erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the third.
Â
With the game even at 10-10 in the bottom of the sixth, first baseman
Dayton Dooney crushed his first career home run to right field, a three-run shot that bounced off the face of the Terry Francona Hitting Center, to give the Cats the lead for good.
Â
Arizona was led on offense by left fielder
Matthew Dyer and Dooney. Dyer finished the night going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a home run, a triple, three RBI, and a walk. Dooney collected his first collegiate home run, and posted a 1-for-4 night that also included a walk.
Â
Also collecting multiple hits for the Cats were catcher
Austin Wells (2x3, 2 R, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB), third baseman
Nick Quintana (2x3, R, 2 RBI, BB), and shortstop
Jacob Blas (2x4, 2 R, RBI, BB).
Â
After offense was the key feature of the early and middle innings, the Wildcats bullpen took over to dominate the final three frames.
Randy Abshier (1.1 IP),
Jonathan Guardado (0.1 IP), and
Avery Weems (2.0 IP) closed out the game with lockdown relief. The trio allowed just one hit and issued no walks to secure the lead and ensure victory. Abshier (1-0) collected his first collegiate win on the mound.
Â
The Wildcats will now hit the road for a three-game series against No. 1 ranked UCLA this Friday through Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. First pitch for game one on Friday night is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. MST.
