TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats (20-13) are on to the Round of 16 as they knocked off Pacific (19-13) by a score of 64-48 in the Second Round of the WNIT on Sunday afternoon in McKale Center. Sunday's win marks the first time since 1998 that Arizona has won multiple postseason games in one season.
Aari McDonald flirted with a triple-double as she scored 20 points, tied her career-high with 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists. McDonald has 28 20-point games this season.
Cate Reese had another great game as she scored 16 points and shot 7-10 from the field.
Dominique McBryde came off the bench today and scored 11 points with four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
As a team, Arizona held the Tigers to 30% shooting and forced them to shoot 19% from three. When things got tight at the end of the third quarter, Arizona buckled down on defense and held Pacific to a game-low eight points in the fourth quarter. The Cats dominated the paint all evening, outrebounding Pacific 46-36 and outscored them in the paint 38-22.
Arizona finished off the first quarter on an 8-0 run and shot 59% to give them a 25-12 lead after one. McDonald scored 10 points in the first six minutes of the game. Pacific got back into the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 17-10 to make it 35-29 Arizona at the half.
It was a defensive struggle in the third quarter as just 25 total points were scored, but Arizona was able to extend their halftime lead to eight. The Cats turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter and scored the first 12 points and would cruise to a win in the end.
Next up Arizona will face Idaho in the WNIT Round of 16 on Thursday, March 28 in McKale Center at 6:30 p.m. MST.
