GymCats Rake in Post Season Honors

TUCSON, Ariz. – Nine GymCats earned a place on the Pac-12 All-Academic teams Wednesday for the second year in a row. Courtney Cowles and Maddi Leydin were named First Team All-Academic and Heather Swanson earned a Second Team honor. Christina Berg, Sydney Freidin, Haylie Hendrickson, Jenny Leung, Adra Parks, and Danielle Spencer received honorable mention.
Cowles and Leydin have both made First Team twice, earning their first All-Academic awards after the 2018 season as sophomores. Cowles has maintained a 4.00 GPA, majoring in Film and Television & Sociology, and Leydin has maintained a 3.96 GPA as a Psychology major during their three years at Arizona.
This is Swanson's second year in a row on the Second Team, with last season being her first year of eligibility for the award. Berg earned honorable mention after the 2018 season and Hendrickson and Spencer have been honorable mentions for three years consecutively. For Freidin, Leung, and Parks, this is the first time they have earned an All-Academic honor.
"I am proud of the entire teams' efforts academically," commented head coach John Court. "They have thrived in a variety of majors while keeping an excellent balance athletically and personally."
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's competition.
Berg was named a WCGA Regular Season Second Team All-American and All-Pac-12 Second Team, announced Wednesday and Tuesday, respectively, for the first time in her career as a GymCat.
The junior had an outstanding season on the uneven bars, earning a career-high 9.975 two times during the regular season. She opened the year with a then-career-high of 9.925 at a quad meet with Central Michigan, Illinois and Bridgeport and topped that score with her first 9.975 at a quad meet with Texas Women's, Centenary, and Air Force. Two weeks later, she tied her career-high 9.975 at the GymCats' final home meet of the season when they hosted LSU.
She is the first GymCat in program history to score a 9.975. During the season, Berg earned above a 9.850 in ten meets and has five individual bars titles, helping her earn Second Team honors.
Student-athletes with the top eight National Qualifying Scores (NQS) for the regular season (with ties), which includes the conference championships, for each event plus the all-around earned All-America honors. Second team All-America honors are earned by student-athletes ranked Nos. 9-16 (with ties) in the NQS.
The GymCats will compete in the first round of the NCAA Regionals on April 4 in Corvallis, Ore. Arizona will take on Iowa in a dual meet to determine who will advance to the second round of competition in Corvallis. In addition to the team competing, five GymCats will be representing Arizona in Corvallis as individual competitors.
