Freshman Pitching Shines Again as Arizona Beats Charleston, 7-5

TUCSON, Ariz. – A three-hit outing from Cameron Cannon and a pair of strong freshman pitching performances led the Arizona Wildcats (10-5) to a 7-5 win over the College of Charleston Cougars (9-5) on Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field.

Cannon finished the night 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one run scored, and two RBI. He is now hitting a team-best .426 and has 10 doubles on the year, the latter of which is the best mark among all NCAA Divisions I players.

Left fielder Donta Williams also continued his streak of hot hitting, following Friday night's four-hit performance with a 2-for-4 outing on Saturday night that included two runs scored and another double, his fifth of the year.

Also collecting multiple RBI was first baseman Tony Bullard, who drove in a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth innings on a perfectly executed double-squeeze bunt.

The Wildcats did most of their damage in the early frames, scoring twice in both the first and second innings and tacking on another run in the third. Bullard's double-squeeze provided the difference in the bottom of the sixth, sending Arizona to their 10th win of the year.

Freshman right-hander Quinn Flanagan took the ball to start for the Wildcats and turned in his first career quality start. Flanagan limited the Cougars to three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out four batters across 6.0 innings of work. He earned the win, moving to 2-0 on the year.

Fellow freshman, left-handed reliever George Arias Jr., closed out the ninth inning for Arizona and earned his first collegiate save. He entered the game in the ninth with no outs and runners on first and second base and retired all three batters he faced to secure a win for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats will go for a sweep of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett with a first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM MST. Tickets and more information can be found online at ArizonaWildcats.com/BSB.
