Arizona to Compete in Golf Channel Televised Western Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona men's golf program is headed to Santa Cruz, Calif. to compete in the 73rd Western Intercollegiate presented by Top Golf. The tournament, which is one of college golf's longest running events, will be held at the historic Pasatiempo Golf Club from April 15th-17th.

The three-day tournament will be televised by Golf Channel, making it the only regular season tournament broadcast live on national television. Golf Channel will air the 54-hole stroke play tournament from 7-10 p.m ET on Monday and Tuesday, and from 4-7 p.m ET on Wednesday.

"The Western Intercollegiate is a major championship for college golf," head coach Jim Anderson said.  "The venue, the field, the date and the history make it very significant and one of the best on our schedule.  Our players love this tournament and enjoy the creativity required to play this course well. We have played well in the past and look forward to using our experience to have a great week. "

Arizona will be among a field of 13 elite programs on the West Coast, including highly ranked USC (6), Cal (11), Stanford (16), and Pepperdine (19). UC Irvine, Colorado State, Hawaii, Oregon, San Jose State, San Diego State, UTEP and Washington round out the competition.

Making the trip to Santa Cruz for Arizona will be senior Ethan Marcus, juniors David Laskin, Brad Reeves, Briggs Duce, and sophomores Trevor Werbylo and Tianlang Guan. Laskin and Werbylo have competed in all regular-season tournaments and have posted the two best averages on the team this season. Reeves is coming off of his highest finish of the season, placing ninth at The Goodwin. This will be Duce's sixth and Guan's fifth tournament of the season.

"The obvious addition of Golf Channel and broadcasting live action is a significant moment for our sport," Anderson said. "We are very excited for the opportunity to showcase our program on this stage and we expect to execute a specific game plan on the tricky greens.  The team has been preparing for fast greens and we know it will be important to make aggressive swings at specific targets, sometimes being several yards away from the hole."

As the only senior in the lineup, Marcus continues a strong season after returning from a redshirt season in January. The Florida native has finished in the top 20 twice this spring.

"The team as a whole is feeling very confident going into the western," Marcus said. "It is a great golf course that suits our team very well. We will be playing with a teammate every round which will give us the opportunity to feed off of each other and continue the success we've had this spring."

The Western has a rich history of elite collegiate golfers with champions like Ken Venturi, Johnny Miller, and Mark O'Meara, as well as participants who are now on the PGA TOUR, like Tiger Woods, Jordan Speith, and Jon Rahm.
Aside from the television broadcast, live stats will be available through GolfStat here, as well as social media updates from Twitter, @arizonamgolf, and Instagram, @arizonagolf.
