TUCSON, Ariz. – Starting pitcher
Andrew Nardi tossed a gem to help the Arizona Wildcats (18-16, 6-9) take a 4-2 win in the series finale against the California Golden Bears (19-12, 7-5) on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.
Â
Nardi put together his second strong outing in a row, cutting down six California batters on strikeouts while scattering seven hits in his 6.0 scoreless innings of work. He spun the quality start on 100 pitches and earned his third win of the year, moving him to 3-3.
Â
The Wildcats offense jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Austin Wells got the Cats on the board with an RBI double and
Branden Boissiere drove him in two batters later on a two-out RBI single. Wells' double extended his on-base streak to 28 games, the longest streak by an Arizona player since
Nick Quintana reached safely in 28 straight games during the 2017 season.
Â
After the Bears scored their first run of the game in the top of the seventh Arizona responded with a two spot in the bottom of the eighth to give them some cushion.
Matthew Dyer blasted a one-out solo home run to left field for the first insurance run, and a Cal wild pitch brought across another later in the inning.
Â
Avery Weems polished off the victory out of the Cats bullpen – he worked the final 2.1 innings and allowed just one run on three hits while earning his second save of the year.
Â
Boissiere finished the afternoon with Arizona's only multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4, and over the course of the weekend combined to go 7-for-10 with three runs scored, one RBI, and one walk. His breakout weekend raised his season batting average to .303.
Â
Next up for Arizona is a three-game series on the road against No. 4 ranked Oregon State. The series will run Thursday, April 18 through Saturday, April 20. First pitch for game one on Thursday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MST on Pac-12 Network.
