Arizona Wins Second-Consecutive Pac-12 Match, Beat No 42 Oregon 4-1

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats capped off a weekend sweep by beating No. 42 Oregon 4-1 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. Arizona has now won two-consecutive Pac-12 matches and are 16-4 on the season.

"I'm proud of our teams fight today," said head coach Clancy Shields. "We wanted to honor coach Wright and dedicate this match to him. I'm proud we could deliver a win, but more importantly I know coach Wright would've been proud of our team's fight, determination and doing it the Wildcat Way.

"I thought we were going to run away with the match quickly in singles, but credit to Oregon, they clawed their way back in. We spoke earlier in the week about being a persistent team, how a little adversity will not derail us, and that was evident with this group today. They willed their way to another great Pac-12 win, and we want to send our lone senior Jonas Maier off our home courts the right way."

"Congratulations to Filip Malbasic on tying the record for most singles wins in a season. The kid is the heart and soul of our team, and very deserving of this recognition. He has worked tirelessly this past year, and it is nice when hard work pays off."

After Oregon took the singles point with wins on courts one and three, Arizona tightened up the screws and took control during singles play.

Jonas Ziverts started off with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win in straight sets on court one. No. 121 Filip Malbasic made quick work on court two with a 6-2, 6-2 win and Jonas Maier also won in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 on court six.

The rest of the matches on courts three, four and five all went to five sets, but in the end, it was Igor Karpovets who clinched the match for Arizona with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win on court three.

The last time Arizona won multiple conference matches was back in 2009.

Next up for the Wildcats will be senior day against Utah on Friday, April 12 at 2 p.m. MST.
