Wildcats Top Penn State 9-5 to Secure Fourth Straight Series Sweep

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Quinn Flanagan tore through six innings of shutout ball and the Arizona Wildcats (29-24) collected a 9-5 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions (22-27) to complete a three-game series sweep in Happy Valley.

Arizona has now won seven games in a row, and 10 of their last 11, while picking up four consecutive series sweeps.

Flanagan got the start for the Cats and turned in Arizona's third straight dominant performance from a starting pitcher. On 81 pitches Flanagan worked 6.0 shutout innings and allowed just three hits, all singles. He issued no walks and registered a career-high eight strikeouts en route to earning his seventh win of the year.

Over the course of the sweep, Arizona's starting pitchers combined to allow just one run on 12 hits while striking out 24 across 19.1 innings of work. All three or Randy Labaut, Andrew Nardi, and Flanagan earned the win and posted a series ERA of 0.47.

Two big innings at the plate did most of the offensive work for the Wildcats in the Saturday finale. Arizona scored three runs in the top of the first on a Nick Quintana RBI single, a bases-loaded walk from Branden Boissiere, and a bases-loaded hit batter.

Quintana was also involved in the Cats other big inning, a five-run top of the fourth. He lifted a two-run home run over the wall in left center field for his 14th dinger of the season and his 34th career home run with the Wildcats. Quintana is now tied for the fourth-most home runs in program history along with David Shermet, who collected 34 long balls from 1985-1988.

Penn State managed to score five runs between the seventh and eighth innings but it was too little, too late. Vince Vannelle shut the door on the Nittany Lions with a scoreless ninth inning to secure the Wildcats seventh straight win.

For the 11th time in the last 12 games the Arizona offense hammered out double digit hits, this time collecting 10 base knocks. Quintana led the charge, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one home run, and four RBI. Also checking in with multiple hits was Cameron Cannon (2x4, 3 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB) and Boissiere (2x3, RBI, BB).

Cannon's two doubles gives him a nation-leading 29 on the year, which also stands just one shy of the Wildcats single-season record for doubles.

Next up for the Wildcats is a three-game series against the Washington State Cougars in Pullman, Washington to close out the regular season schedule. Game one on Thursday night is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. MST. The entire series will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
