Arizona Set for Weekend Showdown with Oregon

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats (19-23, 7-14) continue their extended stretch of home games by welcoming the Oregon Ducks (23-19, 8-10) to Hi Corbett Field for a three-game series this Friday through Sunday. First pitch for game one on Friday night is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. MST.

The Wildcats red-hot offense recently dropped 13 runs and 19 hits on Tuesday night, and will look to continue their momentum rolling into the weekend. The Cats offense is led by catcher Matthew Dyer, who is currently riding an 18-game hit streak and ranks second in the Pac-12 conference with a .399 batting average.

SINCE LAST TIME: Since the last set of game notes, the Wildcats dropped a high-scoring affair to the visiting New Mexico State Aggies, 15-13,  at Hi Corbett Field on Tuesday night...Arizona's freshmen hitters excelled in the loss, combining to go 12-for-23 (.522) with eight runs scored and eight RBI...The freshmen were represented up and down the Wildcats batting order, including catcher Austin Wells (2x4, 2 R, BB), designated hitter Dayton Dooney (3x6, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI), second baseman Tony Bullard (3x4, R, 3 RBI, BB), right fielder Ryan Holgate (2x4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB), and first baseman Branden Boissiere (2x5, R, 3B)...Reliever Vince Vannelle also shined for the Wildcats, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings in which he gave up just two hits and struck out two Aggies batters to keep Arizona in the game down the final stretch of the game.

STREAKONOMICS: Catcher Matthew Dyer currently sports an 18-game hit streak, which stands as the longest logged by a Wildcats player this season and tied for the longest since Steve Selsky notched an 18-game hit streak in 2010 (also: C.J. Ziegler, 2008 and Jordan Brown, 2005)...After collecting hits in all three games at No. 3 Stanford over the weekend, Dyer claimed the longest hit streak of the Jay Johnson era (since 2016), a record which was previously held by Cody Ramer, who hit safely in 17 straight games during the 2016 season — Ramer is now the Wildcats Director of Player Development - Position Players...Over the course of Dyer's current streak — which began on March 25 at San Diego State — he has hit .481 (38x79) with 20 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, and eight RBI...The streak has raised his season batting average from .316 to his current team-best mark of .399...During the streak, Dyer has logged multiple hits 11 times, including two four-hit games and five three-hit performances.

D'YER MAK'ER: Catcher Matthew Dyer has consistently been one of the Wildcats best hitters all season...Dyer opened the season with six hits in the Cats opening series against UMass Lowell and has never began a game this year with his batting average below .300...He leads the team with 20 multiple-hit games, which includes 11 two-hit contests, seven three-hit performances, and two four-hit outings...Dyer has reached base safely via hit or walk in 36-of-40 games in which he's played this season...He has paced Arizona this year in base hits (63) and total bases (93) while also leading the team's qualified batters with a .589 slugging percentage and a .481 on-base percentage...Dyer currently ranks among the top players in the Pac-12 in hits (T-1st, 63), batting average (2nd, .399), triples (T-2nd, 4), on-base percentage (5th, .481), runs scored (7th, 43), total bases (T-7th, 93), and slugging percentage (9th, .589)...As of games played May 1, Dyer's .399 batting average is the fifth-best mark among all Division I sophomores, the fifth-best mark among all Division I catchers, and the 21st-best mark among all Division I players regardless of class standing or position...The last Wildcats player to finish the year ranked among the Top 25 players in the nation in batting average was J.J. GO WITH THE FLOW: With his two-run home run last Friday at No. 3 Stanford, Wildcats infielder Nick Quintana became the first Arizona player in over a decade to swat 10+ home runs in back-to-back seasons...Quintana hit 14 homers for the Cats as a sophomore in 2018...The last players to accomplish this feat were C.J.
