TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second time during head coach
Jay Johnson's tenure, Arizona Wildcats baseball has landed two players on the Pac-12 All-Academic first-team.
Â
Outfielder
Blake Paugh and right-handed pitcher
Quinn Flanagan each earned a selection to the 10-man All-Academic first-team for their outstanding work in the classroom. They are the first Wildcat players to earn this honor since infielder
Louis Boyd and
Kyle Lewis made the first-team in 2017.
Â
Paugh and Flanagan are joined by outfielder
Tate Soderstrom, who was selected to receive honorable mention recognition from the Pac-12.
Â
Paugh, a sophomore, currently sports an overall grade point average of 3.78 and is pursuing his degree in pre-business at the Eller College of Management. The Scottsdale native played in 35 games with 12 starts for the Wildcats during the 2019 regular season, hitting .269 with 11 runs scored, four home runs, and 14 RBI. This is the first all-academic award of Paugh's career.
Â
Flanagan, a redshirt freshman, boasts a career GPA of 3.68 and, like his teammate Paugh, is currently seeking a degree in pre-business at the Eller College of Management. A starting pitcher who joined the Cats from Chandler, Flanagan saw his first game action in nearly three seasons in 2019 after missing his final two high school seasons and freshman campaign at Arizona with an injury. He tied for the team lead with eight wins and notched a team-best 4.92 ERA over 17 games and 13 starts during the regular season. This is the first all-academic honor bestowed upon Flanagan during his collegiate career.
Â
Soderstrom, a sophomore, has accumulated an impressive 3.34 GPA during his time in Tucson, though he has not yet declared a major. He hails from Turlock, California and logged time in 41 games with 14 starts for the Wildcats in 2019. Soderstrom hit .244 and collected 25 RBI in just 90 at-bats during the regular season. This is the first all-academic award earned by Soderstrom during his time at Arizona.
Â
With the announcement of these honors, the Wildcats have now placed four players on the Pac-12 All-Academic first-team during head coach
Jay Johnson's tenure after going without a first-team selection from 2005-2016.
