TUCSON, Ariz. –
Matthew Dyer, who began his collegiate career at Oregon in 2017, scored the winning run Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field to lift the Arizona Wildcats to a 9-8 win over the Ducks in 11 innings.
The win insured a series victory for the Wildcats, who also took the opener Friday night. Arizona improved to 21-23 on the season and 9-14 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon dropped to 23-21 and 8-12 in league play.
Dyer, who went 2 for 5 with a pair of runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, was hit by a pitch with one out in the 11
th to reach base for the fifth time in the game. Dyer, who has five steals on the season, led off first and forced a throw over from pitcher Ryne Nelson. But Nelson's throw sailed passed first baseman Gabe Matthews and Dyer was able to chug all the way around first base to score and give Arizona a win in its first extra-inning game of the season.
For the second straight game, Arizona had to erase a five-run deficit in order to get a win. The Ducks scored five runs in the first off starter
Andrew Nardi to take an early lead. Tanner Smith, Spencer Steer, Jakob Goldfarb and Taylor Adams all had RBI hits in the inning.
The Cats finally cut into the lead in the fourth inning when freshman
Tony Bullard and sophomore right fielder
Blake Paugh hit back-to-back home runs off starter Robert Ahlstrom to make it 5-2. Nardi cruised after the first, tossing up six straight zeroes. The junior lefty ended up going seven innings, allowing just the five runs he gave up in the first. He struck out six and walked two.
Nardi gave up just one hit after the first, which was a leadoff single to Smith in the fifth. He then retired the final nine batters he faced.
After he pitched a perfect top of the seventh, the Cats went to work at the plate and batted around for the second straight game.
Donta Williams opened the inning with a single and moved to second when
Austin Wells drew a one-out walk.
Nick Quintana then came up with two on and one out and launched his 11
th home run of the season for a three-run shot to tie the game at five apiece.
Cameron Cannon followed Quintana's blast with a single and Bullard walked to put two on for Paugh. The sophomore from Scottsdale once again came through, this time with a two-run double to score Cannon and Bullard and make it 7-5.
The Ducks wasted no time answering back with three runs of their own in the top of the eighth to grab a 8-7 lead. The Cats couldn't plate a run in the eighth, despite loading the bases, and went to the ninth, trailing by a run.
With two outs and nobody on, Dyer singled. Wells then followed with his fifth triple of the season to score Dyer from first and tie the game at eight.
Vince Vannelle, who threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, worked a scoreless 10
th, before getting one out in the 11
th. Lefty
Gil Luna then came on and got the final two outs of the inning to get the game to the bottom of the 11
th and set up the heroics from Dyer, who transferred to Arizona from Oregon after his freshman season.
Cannon led the way offensively, going 3 for 5 with his 22
nd double of the season. Paugh and Quintana each had two hits and three RBI, while Bullard was 1 for 4 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks.
The Cats will now go for the series sweep Sunday at noon.
