Cats Head to Austin for NCAA Championships

TUCSON, Ariz. – On Wednesday, the University of Arizona track and field program will open competition at the NCAA Championships in Austin, TX. A conglomerate of 19 athletes are slated to compete in 12 entries throughout the four-day National Championships beginning on Wednesday, June 5th.
All competition will be streamed or televised on the ESPN family of networks. For a full schedule, please visit espn.com/watch.

Last Time Out: The Cats competed in the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Highlighting the outing in Sacramento were the ladies 4x400-meter relay team and James Smith, who set school records to punch their Tickets to Austin.
The Knochness Monster
Sophomore Jordan Geist will make his fourth appearance in the NCAA Championships to compete in the shot put. The Arizona School Record Holder, four-time USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the year and 2019 Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Year holds an NCAA-leading mark of 21.59m (70-10). He will enter the circle on Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. MST.
No Intro Needed
Redshirt junior Carlos Villarreal is set to compete in his third NCAA Championships this academic year and the fourth in his career. The Rio Rico, Ariz. won the 1500-meter run quarterfinal at the NCAA West Regional in 3:39.67 to punch his ticket his first Outdoor NCAA Championships. He currently holds the No. 2 NCAA 1500-meter run mark with a time of 3:37.22. He will hear the gun go off at 4:46 p.m. MST on Wednesday.
Waggoner's Lap
Tatum Waggoner will compete in the 400-meter dash in Austin and the 4x400-meter relay. She was the first time-qualifier at the NCAA West Regional in the 400-meter dash to garner her first individual entry in an NCAA Championship. The 400-meter dash gets started at 6:30 p.m. MST on Thursday.
Harvey's Hurdlers
Three 400-meter hurdlers are slated to compete in Austin this weekend. Arizona School & Freshman Record Holder James Smith finished third in his heat to auto-qualify for the national meet. He crossed the line in 49.88 to set a new PR and rank 10th in the NCAA. On the ladies side, senior Karolina Pahlitzsch and sophomore Shannon Meisberger are slated to compete. They both finished third in their respective heats to auto-qualify for the contest in Austin. Pahlitzsch ranks 14th in the NCAA in 57.10 and Meisberger follows in 15th with a time of 57.14. Smith will toe the line on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. MST and the ladies will compete on Thursday at 9 p.m.
Puddle Jumping
Senior Bailey Roth will compete in his fourth-straight NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3K steeplechase. The senior auto-qualified for the meet with a second-place finish in his heat at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Roth holds a season-best mark of 8:38.68 to rank 13th on the NCAA list. Roth will compete on Wednesday at 5:02 p.m. MST.
Jumpin' to Austin
The junior high jumping duo of Karla Teran and Justice Summerset return to the NCAA Championships for the second time in their careers. Teran tied for first at the NCAA West Preliminary Round to punch her ticket to Austin. She set her PR this season at the Pac-12 Championships with a clearance of 1.88m (6-2) to win the event. Summerset finished eighth in Sacramento to qualify for the contest in Austin. He set his PR this season at the Jim Click Shootout, clearing 2.25m (7-4.5) to win the event. Summerset will compete Friday at 7 p.m. MST and Teran will jump on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Pass the Baton to Austin
Three Wildcat relay teams earned bids to the National Championships at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The ladies 4x400-meter relay team of Meisberger, Waggoner, Pahlitzsch and Diana Gajda clocked a time of 3:30.67 to punch their ticket to Austin, setting a school record in the process. April Sutton will serve as an alternate.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Trevor Volpe, Zakee Washington, PJ Austin and Umajesty Williams clocked a season-best time of 39.45 to finish second in their heat, third overall in Sacramento. The 4x400-meter relay team of Williams, Smith, Maksims Sincukovs and Washington finished third in their heat to auto-qualify in 3:06.42 for the NCAA Championships. David Egbo will be an alternate on the 4x100-meter relay team, Daniel Egbo and Makarios Page will serve as alternates on the 4x400-meter relay team.
The men's 4x100-meter team will compete on Wednesday at 6:32 p.m MST and the 4x400-meter team will follow at 6:48 p.m.. The ladies relay team will hear the gun go off on Thursday at 8:18 p.m..
