Baseball Recruiting Class Ranked No. 11 in the Nation

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats 2019 recruiting class picked up national acclaim on Monday morning when it was ranked as the No. 11 class in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. The Cats class also finished ranked No. 14 in the Perfect Game rankings.

Four players who were selected in June's Major League Baseball Draft headline the class. All four players — RHP Davis Vainer, RHP Chandler Murphy, OF Mac Bingham, and LHP Garrett Irvin — chose to forgo their professional opportunities for the chance to play at Arizona this spring.

"We are excited to add this class to our team for 2020 and beyond," head coach Jay Johnson said. "I believe that this group fits extremely well with our returners and helps us enhance our team and program in a positive way. This class is extremely solid in both ability and character, which gives us a strong foundation moving forward. Focusing mostly on pitching, this class blends well with our group of young position players from last year. We are excited about the process of building this group of talented players into the best team it can possibly be."

The four drafted players who will suit up for Arizona this season are:
  • RHP Davis Vainer  |  Alabama  |  Houston Astros, 21st round
    • Graduate transfer from the University of Alabama who posted a 3.34 ERA, struck out 43 batters in 29.2 innings of work, and held opposing players to a .173 batting average last year with the Crimson Tide.
  • RHP Chandler Murphy  |  Liberty HS  |  Houston Astros, 36th round
    • Tabbed as the No. 2 overall prospect in the state of Arizona and the No. 69 right-handed pitching prospect in the country by Perfect Game.
  • OF Mac Bingham  |  Torrey Pines HS  |  Chicago Cubs, 40th round
    • Two-sport star at Torrey Pines High School, where he posted a career .356 batting average with 12 home runs on the diamond and rushed for 44 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 yards on the gridiron. Bingham was tabbed to the first-team All-CIF San Diego squads as a junior and senior was earned Max Preps All-State honors as a senior.
  • LHP Garrett Irvin  |  Riverside City College  |  Boston Red Sox, 40th round
    • Went 10-2 with a 2.25 ERA and was named the Orange Empire Conference Pitcher of the Year while playing for the Riverside CC Tigers in 2019.
In addition to the Cats drafted players, the 2019 class also features:
  • RHP Dawson Netz, Perfect Game's No. 4 ranked California right-handed pitcher who posted a 0.47 ERA across 208.1 innings of work at Maranatha High School in Pasadena.
  • RHP Wesley Scott, who slotted in right behind Netz as Perfect Game's No. 5 ranked California right-handed pitcher and racked up 222 strikeouts over 142 frames of prep ball at Woodcrest Christian High School.
  • LHP Ian Churchill, a transfer from Santa Barbara City College who last year was named the California Community College State Pitcher of the Year following an 8-2 campaign with a 1.96 ERA.
  • RHP Hunter Cope continues the class trend as a Top 10-ranked California right-handed pitcher and a Top 50-ranked national prospect at his position. Cope towers on the mound at 6-foot-11 and earned Preseason All-American recognition from Perfect Game.
  • 1B Blake Klassen, who hit .426 with six doubles and four home runs as a senior at J Serra High School and checked in as the No. 8 ranked first baseman in the country by Perfect Game.
  • C Kaden Hopson, a highly-rated prep backstop who posted a .355 batting average and a .985 fielding percentage across three varsity seasons at Redlands East Valley High School.
  • SS Jacob Shaver saw extensive playing time as a senior at Jordan High School in Salt Lake City as a senior, hitting .340 with 11 doubles, five triples, and two home runs to vault himself into the upper echelon of Utah state prospect rankings.
Both Netz and Scott also participated in the 2018 Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park, the premier high school prospect showcase in the country.

Arizona's 2019 class arrived on campus in Tucson in August and have participated in skill training with the Wildcats coaching staff in preparation for the upcoming fall practice window, which will begin next month.

They will join a Cats roster that includes members the much-heralded 2018 signing class that produced at an elite level all last season. Austin Wells, Dayton Dooney, Ryan Holgate, Branden Boissiere, and Tony Bullard were all part of a recruiting class that ranked No. 3 by Collegiate Baseball, No. 11 by D1Baseball.com, and No. 13 by Baseball America. That group combined to post a .308 batting average, 203 runs scored, 51 doubles, 11 triples, 26 home runs, 190 RBI, a .418 on-base percentage, and a .505 slugging percentage in 2019.
