ALBUQUERQUE-- The Arizona men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Tucker Intercollegiate with success as they sit in first place heading into the second day of play. The Cats put up a total score of 562 for the day, putting them ahead of New Mexico and Brigham Young.
Arizona, at 14-under, has a one stroke lead over New Mexico and four strokes over BYU before starting the second day of play which starts on Saturday at the UNM Championship Course.
Junior Trevor Werbylo had the best outing of the day, shooting a 72 his first round and a 65 in the second round, he currently sits in second place on the leaderboard at 7-under. Werbylo had seven birdies to no bogeys in his second round.
"Today I definitely had to stay patient," said Werbylo. "In the morning I was playing alright but wasn't scoring very well. In the afternoon I made a few more putts and cleaned up a couple mistakes. We are in a good position for tomorrow and we are all looking forward to getting back out there."
Senior David Laskin sits only five strokes behind Werbylo, having shot a 74 in the first round and a 68 in the second. He is currently tied for 14th.
Senior Briggs Duce had a great performance, nailing four birdies in a row on holes 14-17. Duce is currently in 20th place on the leaderboard.
Senior Brad Reeves played an impressive first round, sinking five birdies and shooting a 69 for the round. Reeves finished the day tied for 33rd place.
Freshman Wildcat Chase Sienkiewicz had a spectacular first round, with four birdies, two of them back to back, along with an eagle on the 9th hole. He is currently tied for the 26th position.
"We had a solid day today. Our team is composed so we ride the highs and lows very well and the position we are in is truly a team effort," said head coach Jim Anderson. "Brad and Chase really played well in the morning from our leadoff spots and Trevor and Dave anchored us with big rounds this afternoon. Briggs was a machine like always rolling in 4 consecutive birds to get his round back in the red this afternoon too. We have many positives to take away but the best part is that our team is in this position after having made mistakes too. We will find a way to improve on a few areas tomorrow and if we have the low final round, which is always a mini goal, we will have a victory. In the meantime, it's one shot at a time tomorrow and we expect an even more challenging Championship Course."
Sophomore individual player Santeri Lehesmaa put up three birdies in the first round of play, and Junior Drake Mendenhall had four birdies during the second round. Freshman Wildcat Hayden Sayre had a great first round, also putting up four birdies in his first tournament as a Wildcat.
