ALBUQUERQUE-- The Arizona Wildcats finished their second tournament of the season in third place on Saturday in Albuquerque at the UNM Championship Course. The team put up a total of 856 for the tournament, while New Mexico and Brigham Young tied for first place after both put up scores of 854 for the weekend.
The Wildcats have now finished in the top three in each of their first two tournaments of the year after a second-place finish at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale earlier this month.
"We had a strong tournament. It's hard not to think about the mistakes we made, but the team did a very good job accepting the challenges the course presented," said head coach Jim Anderson. "We had too many big numbers today but the team remained composed and we finished under par on a great golf course. We will continue finding this position near the lead and when we do, great things are going to happen."
Junior Trevor Werbylo finished with six birdies in his third round, and shot a 72 for the day. He finished the tournament tied for second place at 7-under par.
Senior David Laskin finished the tournament tied for 11th place, after shooting a 73 in the third round and sinking four birdies. He finished 1-under par for the tournament.
Senior Brad Reeves and Freshman Chase Sienkiewicz both finished the tournament tied for 25th place, with Sienkiewicz sinking four birdies and shooting a 75, and Reeves finishing the day with three birdies and a score of 74.
Senior Briggs Duce finished the tournament tied for 36th place after sinking a total of 10 birdies over the three-round tournament.
Senior Drake Mendenhall, playing as an individual, finished the day tied for 30th place, after putting three birdies on the board. Sophomore Santeri Lehesmaa sunk five birdies during the round, and he finished the tournament in 55th place. Freshman Wildcat Hayden Sayre scored an eagle on the first hole in his tournament debut with Arizona.
The Wildcats are now looking ahead to their next tournament, the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Ore., which will take place Oct. 14-15. Keep up with the Wildcats on social media, on Twitter, @arizonamgolf, and Instagram, @arizonagolf.
