TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona's men's and women's swimming teams put the finishing touches on their season-opening sweep of Grand Canyon on Friday evening at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Arizona's men defeated Grand Canyon 1,299-1,127 and the women beat the Antelopes 1,094-668.

For the second straight night, the Wildcats dominated finals, finishing atop the podium in nearly every single event. Axana Merckx led the way for the Wildcats with two individual titles in tonight's session.

After collecting seven NCAA B cuts last night, UA grabbed seven more on Friday. Brooks Fail (1650 free, 400 IM) picked up two more B cuts on Friday after earning two on Thursday. Noah Reid (100 fly), Ogi Maric (200 back), Isaac Stump (200 back), Sam Iida (200 breast) and David Schlicht (400 IM) also earned B cuts during the finale. 

In his first meet as a Wildcat, Maric swam the ninth-fastest 200 back in school history, winning the A final with a time of 1:41.82, good for an NCAA B cut.

Both the Arizona men's and women's teams improved to 1-0 following the first meet of the 2020-21 season.
