TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona junior
Trevor Werbylo has been named to the 2020 Ben Hogan Award Watch List, the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation announced Wednesday, in association with the Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Werbylo is one of 31 collegiate golfers named to the list for the award that is given annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer, taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period from June to May.
Last year as a sophomore, Werbylo was one of 32 golfers named honorable mention Division I PING All-America, becoming the 56
th player in Arizona Golf history to receive All-America honors. He was also named All-Pac-12 Second Team after leading Arizona in scoring average, rounds under par and Top 20 finishes.
He finished last season with a scoring average of 70.72, which is the third-best mark in school history.
Werbylo picked up right where he left off this season as a junior. In five tournaments this year, Werbylo has four Top 10 finishes, including three second-place finishes. He has shot par or better in 12 of 15 rounds this season and has a scoring average of 69.40.
In his career, Werbylo has a scoring average of 71.41 in 92 career rounds with 12 Top 10 finishes. He will look to become the second Arizona player ever to win the Ben Hogan Award. Ricky Barnes earned the honor in 2003 when he split the award with Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan. Arizona is one of eight schools represented on this year's watch list with a previous winner, joining Arizona State, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Texas, UNLV and Wake Forest.
This year's list of 10 semifinalists will be unveiled on April 15. That group will then be pared down to three finalists in May with the finalists attending a black-tie dinner at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where the winner will be named.
Werbylo and the Wildcats will return to action Thursday, Feb. 20 in the John Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawai'i.
