Cats in 1st Place After Opening Day in Cabo

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The Arizona Wildcats men's golf team got off to a roaring start at the Cabo Collegiate on Sunday.

As a team, the Wildcats shot six-under and are tied for first place with Oklahoma State and Baylor. The three teams have a three-shot lead over Arizona State, who is at -3 and in fourth place. On the individual leaderboard, junior Trevor Werbylo finds himself in first place all by himself after an opening round 66.

Werbylo, who is ranked No. 34 nationally by Golfstat, poured in seven birdies on Sunday, which was the second most on the course. Werbylo started his round on No. 9 and parred. He then followed with back-to-back birdies to get into the red early in his round. He birdied three of the four Par 5s on the course and shot 33-33 on a course that reminded him of Arizona's home course, Sewailo Golf Club.

"It is similar to our course in Arizona," the junior said. "I think it might be new to some other teams to see desert golf, but I felt comfortable. I liked the course today and yesterday, so I had confidence coming into today."

Freshman Aidric Chan also posted an under-par round. Chan shot a two-under 69 and is tied for eighth. Chan had just one bogey on his card to three birdies. He had a hot stretch, picking up birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7. It was Chan's lowest round since firing a 65 in the second round of the team's first tournament of the year, the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

"We had a solid day today," Coach Jim Anderson said. "Trevor was outstanding, and really carried us. Aidric was steady as well."

Senior Brad Reeves overcame two double bogeys on the back nine to post an even-par 71. Reeves had five birdies in his round, including three straight on holes two through four. He also picked up birdies on No. 11 and No. 13. He is tied for 25th after the opening round.

"Brad was impressive because he dug out from four-over to post an even par round, which we needed," Anderson said.

Senior David Laskin is one shot behind Reeves at +1 after shooting a 72 in the opening round. He is tied for 39th. Fellow senior Briggs Duce shot a two-over 73 and is tied for 48th.

The Cabo Collegiate is considered one of the finest fields all season. Fourteen of the 15 teams in the field are ranked in the Top 50 and the field features five Top 25 teams, including No. 14 Arizona.

"Having played hte course again, I think we are prepared for a good round tomorrow, too," Anderson said. "We will focus on one shot at a time and do our best to stay aggressive in the right spots."
