A Letter From Sam Thomas

Dear Wildcat Nation,

Thank you for an amazing season filled with laughter, tears, celebration, and so much more. It is unfortunate that this season had to be cut short, but that doesn't take away the history and memories that were made.

The entire year we had the whole community of Tucson supporting us. We loved being able to represent the 'A' and make everyone proud. With all the support, we were able to do some amazing things such as beating a top-5 team. We will never forget the moments that were shared with all of you in McKale and we cannot thank you enough for the tremendous amount of support.

This season to me has meant so much. My freshman year I took a chance on this program coming in with a new coaching staff and almost a whole new team. I believed in coach Barnes' message of trusting the process. I knew that we would be rebuilding the team in order to become a successful and consistent top program. I knew to reach this goal it would take time and I was willing to put my time and effort. I had no idea that we would be this close to the goal so soon.

There is always room for improvement and we still have a long way to go, but this season was a taste of what it's like to be a top program. I have seen this team grow so much in the past few years and even in this season alone. After going to Texas and beating them in their own house, I knew we would do some special things this season. We had many highs such as beating Stanford and some lows like losing to Cal. Win or lose we learned from every game and appreciated all the love and support. This season I really got a glimpse of much this community loves us. I felt as if I was playing in front of my family every night in McKale.

One of my favorite moments from this season was on one of our away trips. We traveled to the Oregon schools and had just got done playing Oregon and were traveling to play Oregon State. Saturdays are our travel days, so our day consists of traveling, practice, and eating. This trip we decided to do some team bonding before bed. We all ate dinner and watched the men's team play. After dinner, we had a game night and started playing a bunch of different board games, card games, anything we could think of.

It was nice to have team bonding on the road since it can be overwhelming on away trips dealing with homework, being away from home, and constantly traveling. We were able to share laughs and learn more about each other. We got closer as a team that night and the next day we ended up beating Oregon State which was the cherry on top.

There have been so many memories with fans that I cannot begin to name them all. There are so many fans that have said/done very meaningful things to me. One moment I remember was after the Stanford game, a couple of teammates and myself went to the tennis match. We met a family with two young children. The children were very nervous at first but a few minutes later they warmed up to us and sat right next to us the whole match. They kept making comments about how much they love watching us play and they cheer so loud for us. It is moments like those that I will remember for forever.

Another time on Valentine's Day a little boy made me a Valentine's Day card all by himself. He gave it to me after the game and gave me a great big hug. We have people tell us all the time how we give them motivation and inspire them. I have had children tell me that they want to go to college now because of me. In the moment you do not realize that you are a role model to some people. When you take a step back and listen to what people are telling you, it warms your heart knowing that you are making a difference in someone's life.

It saddens me to think that our historic season had to end the way it did. We will never get it back, but we can focus on next year and all the memories that will come with it. Until then it's time to enjoy this break with family and get back in the gym as soon as possible. I will be looking forward to seeing all of you next season until then stay safe and healthy and Bear Down!

Love,
Sam
