Three Wildcats Tabbed as Top-150 MLB Draft Prospects

TUCSON, Ariz. — Three Arizona Baseball players landed in the rankings of Top 150 prospects for the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft published by D1Baseball.com today.

Outfielder Ryan Holgate (No. 82), outfielder Donta Williams (No. 126), and incoming right-handed pitcher Austin Smith (No. 137) represented the Cats in the Top 150. Arizona is one of just three Pac-12 programs with multiple players on the list, joined by UCLA and California.

Holgate, who enters his third season with the Wildcats in 2021, has been a crucial piece of Arizona's lineup during his time in Tucson. The slugging outfielder has collected 14 doubles, eight home runs, and 45 RBI to go along with his .273 career batting average. In just 15 games during the 2020 season, Holgate led the team and ranked eighth in the Pac-12 with a .377 batting average and ran together a .459 on-base percentage after reaching base safely in all 15 games.

Williams, one of the best center fielders in the country, has logged 114 games in a Wildcat uniform while posting a career .275 batting average with 100 runs scored, 28 extra-base hits, and 59 RBI. His success extends to the field as well, where he boasts a .987 fielding percentage and earned 2019 Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honors. Williams' numbers have steadily improved while in Tucson and 2020 was no exception; in his junior campaign his electric game produced a .348 batting average and a .527 OBP that was tied for the team lead with first round draft pick Austin Wells.

Smith, a right-handed pitcher in the incoming recruiting class, joins the Wildcats after three stellar years with the Southwestern University Pirates. Across 25 games (20 starts) at Southwestern, Smith posted a 3.41 ERA with a 12-4 record and an astounding 179 strikeouts over 134.2 innings pitched. Before the 2020 season was cut short, Smith made three starts and allowed just one unearned run while striking out 14 opposing batters in 8.0 innings. While pitching for the Round Rock Hairy Men this summer, he contributed 3.0 innings and eight strikeouts to a combined no-hit performance.

With the selections of Wells (1st round, New York Yankees) and Matthew Dyer (4th round, New York Mets) in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Wildcats have now had at least one player selected in 23 straight drafts and multiple selections in 10 consecutive drafts.
