TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Gymnastics head coach
John Court has agreed to a three-year contract extension that will see him lead the GymCats through the 2024 season.
Â
Court, who is currently in his third season managing Arizona Gymnastics, has been with the program for 23 years. In his two-plus decades in Tucson, coach Court's overall body or work includes developing multiple All-Americans, helping extend the GymCats NCAA Regional appearance streak to 31 seasons, overseeing unprecedented success in the classroom, and much more.
Â
"John has done an outstanding job leading our gymnastics program as head coach over the past three seasons following his two decades as an assistant," Vice President and Director of Athletics
Dave Heeke said. "I look forward to his continued leadership of our program with his tremendous energy and unwavering integrity. The success and growth of Arizona Gymnastics during John's tenure as head coach has been on display in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Arizona Athletics looks forward to our gymnastics program continuing to be a first-class representative of the Wildcat Way as they develop future generations of athletic, academic and life champions."
Â
In 2019, his first season as head coach, the GymCats competed in the NCAA Corvallis Regional and qualified four individual competitors to Regionals. Under coach Court's supervision, both his primary events of vault and floor have finished the year ranked among the Top 25 nationally.
Â
"I am very excited to continue building Arizona Gymnastics. We have accomplished many things in a short amount of time and we look forward to pushing the program to new heights in the future," Court said. "I would like to thank
Dave Heeke for trusting me to lead the program, and
Krystal Swindlehurst and
Suzanne Affeldt for their partnerships. We have a fantastic group of student-athletes and coaches that want to succeed and make a difference."
Â
Prior to his promotion to head coach, Court spent 19 seasons at Arizona as an assistant coach specializing in vault and floor exercise. His efforts in the gym and on the recruiting trail, where he served as the GymCats recruiting coordinator, led to perennial NCAA Regional appearances and a trip to the 2002 NCAA Championships.
Â
His time as an assistant was highlighted by a pair of South Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors in both 2007 and 2012.
Â
In addition to coaching 2019 All-American
Christina Berg, coach Court oversaw the development of six All-Americans during his time in an assistant role. Ring of Honor inductee and 2001 AAI American Award recipient Heidi Hornbeek, all-time program leading scorer Monica Bisordi, and 2008 Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Kristen Klarenbach are just a few of the All-Americans who have graced the McKale Center under coach Court's leadership.
