Hiapo Posts Second Straight 20-Dig Match in Loss in Pullman

PULLMAN, Wash. -- After the Wildcats grabbed the first set against No. 15 Washington State, the Cougars came back to win the final four sets, dispatching the Wildcats 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-12.
Sophomore libero Kamaile Hiapo was terrific again for the Wildcats, posting 20 digs for the second straight match and has had at least 18 in three consecutive. Arizona had 72 digs in the match, one off of its season-high. Paige Whipple finished second on the team with 17 digs, missing out on a double-double by just one kill.
Offensively, though, the Wildcats struggled against the front-line of the Cougars. Washington State entered the week as the Pac-12 leader in blocks, and it added to its lead on Thursday night. WSU posted 14 blocks, including 10 from Magda Jehlarova, had held UA to a .109 hitting percentage in the match. The Cats were led in kills by a pair of freshmen -- Jaelyn Hodge had 14 while Sofia Maldonado Diaz had 12.
Arizona got off to a hot start on Thursday, winning the first set, 25-22. But for the second straight match, the Cats weren't able to close despite winning the first. Washington State won a pair of closely contested sets in the second and third and then ran away with the fourth, 25-12, to win the match.
Arizona fell to 9-11 (9-11 Pac-12) on the season, while Washington State improved to 12-3 (12-3 Pac-12). The two teams meet again on Saturday in the regular season in the finale at noon.
