Wildcats Complete Sweep of Trojans with 8-4 Sunday Win

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (27-11, 12-6) picked up an 8-4 victory and completed their series sweep of the USC Trojans (18-16, 6-9) on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett.

The Wildcats rode stellar pitching and yet another offensive onslaught to their first Pac-12 series sweep of the year. Arizona has now won six consecutive games and sits atop the Pac-12 Conference standings.

Right-hander Austin Smith got the call for his second start of the season on Sunday and worked 3.1 hitless innings. Smith (1-0) allowed just one run and earned his first win in an Arizona uniform.

Fellow righty Chandler Murphy followed Smith out of the bullpen and fanned six Trojans over 3.1 frames. Vince Vannelle closed out the game with 2.1 perfect innings to lock down his team-leading sixth save of the year.

The Wildcats offense put together 13 hits and drew six walks en route to an eight-run performance. They scored three in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead and never looked back. Nik McClaughry's two-run double in the second, Daniel Susac's two-run single up the middle in the sixth, and Jacob Berry's 11th home run of the year in the eighth highlighted the offensive effort.
