TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Baseball bullpen ace Vince Vannelle has been selected as one of ten finalists for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, the association announced on Wednesday.
Vannelle is the first Wildcat to earn finalist distinction from the award, and one of three Pac-12 players to make the 10-man finalist slate along with Stanford's Zach Grech and Oregon State's Jake Mullholland.
Through 23 appearances so far this season, Vannelle has gone 5-2 with a team-high eight saves and a 2.73 ERA. Across 29.2 innings he has struck out 37 batters and walked just 10. Vannelle's eight saves this year are the seventh most in a single season in program history and his 12 career saves are tied for eighth all-time at Arizona.
The right-hander from Ohio limited opposing hitters to a .267 batting average and held teams scoreless in 14-of-23 outings. Among his numerous season highlights were a save in game two against No. 16 Oregon to seal the series victory and an emphatic shutdown ninth inning in game three at Oregon State to complete a miraculous comeback and set up a Pac-12 Championship.
The Stopper of the Year recipient will be announced on Friday, June 18.
Vannelle and the Wildcats continue their postseason run by hosting Ole Miss for the Tucson NCAA Super Regional this weekend at Hi Corbett Field. Times, ticketing information, and more for the three-game series can be found HERE.
