Four Wildcats Selected on Day Two of 2021 MLB Draft

TUCSON, Ariz. — Four Arizona Wildcats were selected on the second day of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft, a day that spanned rounds 2-10.

Outfielder Ryan Holgate was the first Wildcat off the board, going to the St. Louis Cardinals with the 70th overall selection. Next up was Branden Boissiere, who was also drafted as an outfielder; he was taken with the 82nd overall selection by the Washington Nationals. Outfielder Donta Williams continued the quick succession of Wildcats selected, going to the Baltimore Orioles with the 106th overall selection. The final Arizona selection of the day was left-handed pitcher Gil Luna, who was taken by the Chicago White Sox with the 275th overall pick.

Holgate, a three-year starter for the Wildcats, posted a career batting average of .314 with 95 runs and 101 RBI across 131 games in Tucson. The slugging outfielder enjoyed a breakout season in 2021, hitting .351 with 49 runs, 20 doubles, 11 home runs, and 56 RBI while starting in all 63 games. En route to leading the Wildcats to a postseason berth and College World Series run, Holgate compiled a team-leading 28 multi-hit games and 18 multi-RBI performances. He started all eight of Arizona's postseason games last season and hit .400 with six runs, five extra-base hits, and eight RBI. Holgate smacked a two-run home run off this year's No. 10 overall selection, Kumar Rocker, in game one of the 2021 College World Series.

Boissiere, one of the Wildcats most consistent hitters over the last three seasons, concludes his collegiate journey with an astounding .355 career batting average, 107 runs scored, and 100 RBI. Across 63 starts in 2021 he posted career-best marks with a .369 batting average, 69 runs, 12 doubles, five home runs, 63 RBI, a .506 slugging percentage, and a .451 on-base percentage; his .369 AVG led the team and ranked third in the Pac-12 Conference. While serving as the Wildcats everyday first baseman last year he logged a .989 fielding percentage. Boissiere also succeeded on the biggest stages in '21, posting a team-leading .405 batting average with seven runs, four doubles, and eight RBI in the postseason.

Williams, who established himself as one of the nation's premier center fielders during his time in Tucson, registered a .302 career batting average, 181 runs, and 108 RBI as a Wildcat from 2018-21. After breaking out in the COVID-shortened 2020 season he returned for the '21 campaign and picked up right where he left off, hitting .342 with 81 runs, 17 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 49 RBI, and a .481 on-base percentage across 62 games. Williams' 81 runs scored led the Wildcats and the Pac-12 and ranked second in the nation. He put together 23 multi-hit performances, drove in multiple RBI 13 times, and logged a 48-game on-base streak during the 2021 season. Williams, a highlight machine in center field, posted a .982 career fielding percentage and logged eight outfield assists. During Arizona's run to and through the 2021 College World Series, he hit .378 with 10 runs, four doubles, two homers, and eight RBI.

Luna, a four-year Arizona veteran, broke out in a big way in 2021 and posted a 1.69 ERA with a 13.08 K/9 across 14 relief appearances. From April 11 to May 27 — a span that covered 19.2 innings — he worked 10 straight games without allowing an earned run. Luna limited opposing hitters to a .178 batting average in 2021 and picked up his second career save. From 2018-21 he saw time in 62 games with the Wildcats and went 3-4 with two saves and a 5.52 ERA.
