Arizona Volleyball Red-Blue Match Set for Saturday

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Volleyball's annual Red-Blue scrimmage is set for Saturday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. MST in McKale Center. The Red-Blue scrimmage will kick off Dave Rubio's 30th season as head coach of the Wildcats.
This will be the first chance for fans to see the 2021 team before the Cats open the season at home with the Cactus Classic on Aug. 27-28 in McKale Center. Arizona will host Marist, New Mexico State, and UC San Diego in the Cactus Classic.
Arizona is returning eleven players from the 2020-21 roster. The returners include seniors Zyonna Fellows, Malina Kalei Ua, and Merle Weidt, juniors, Dilara Gedikoglu and Kamaile Hiapo, and sophomores Jaleesa Caroccio, Joy Galles, Emery Herman, Jaelyn Hodge, Sofia Maldonado Diaz, Simone Overbeck.
The Wildcats will welcome nine newcomers to the team this season: freshmen Nicole Briggs, Madison Ellman, Ava Francis, Alayna Johnson, Puk Stubbe, Ava Tortorello, Haven Wray, and Jennifer Wroblicky and senior transfer Elena Shklyar.
Admission to the Red-Blue Scrimmage is included for season ticket holders and is $5 for non-season ticket holders.

- In a shortened season, Arizona finished 2020-21 with a 10-11 record, playing only Pac-12 teams. The Cats finished the season ranked sixth in the conference.
- Arizona is returning four starters plus their libero and will welcome nine newcomers to the squad.
- With the loss of Paige Whipple and her impressive offensive, Arizona will turn to Sofia Maldonado Diaz who led the team with 272 kills and Jaelyn Hodge who had 176 kills last season.
- Dave Rubio enters his 30th season as the head coach of Arizona Volleyball. Over his 30 years, Rubio has amassed 537 victories at Arizona as head coach, leading all active Pac-12 coaches, and is the 14th winningest coach in Division 1 volleyball with 659 total career wins.
- Arizona was picked to finish eighth in the Preseason Pac-12 Coaches' Poll. After a sixth-place finish last spring, the Wildcats are returning 11 letterwinners, including the reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Sofia Maldonado Diaz.
