30 Years of Dave Rubio: An Arizona Legend

Arizona Volleyball head coach Dave Rubio is entering his 30th season with the Wildcats. During his tenure, Rubio has turned the Wildcats into a program that not only contends in the dominant Pac-12 Conference, but on a national level as well.
 
In his time in Tucson, Rubio has led the Wildcats to 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, which has included a trip to the Final Four, four Elite Eight appearances and eight trips to the Sweet 16, including a regional semifinal run in 2016.
 
Rubio has guided the Wildcats to eight NCAA Tournaments the last 12 years, UA's best streak since going to 10 straight from 1996-2005, a 10-year period when the Wildcats finished in the top half of the Pac-10 nine times.
 
Rubio has cemented himself as a legend in Arizona Athletics, having been named Coach of the Year three times and being the 14th winningest coach in Division I Volleyball with 659 wins. In 2018, Rubio became the second coach in Pac-10/12 history to win 500 career matches. Currently, he leads all active Pac-12 coaches with 537 victories.
 
During his tenure, he has recruited and coached four first-team All-Americans, including Arizona's first ever consensus two-time honoree Dana Burkholder, an AVCA Freshman of the Year, an AVCA Pacific South Region Freshman of the Year, a Pac-10 Player of the Year, a Pac-12 Setter of the Year, two Pac-10/12 Freshman of the Year honorees, 33 All-Pac-10/12 performers, 14 All-Pac-10/12 freshman players and 68 academic all-conference athletes. Wildcat athletes have also earned 46 Pac-10/12 Player of the Week honors under his guide.  

Most recently, Rubio coached Sofia Maldonado Diaz to AVCA Pacific South Freshman of the Year and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors during the 2020-21 season.

September 4, 1992 - Rubio earned his first win at Arizona vs. #20 Pepperdine
