BERKELEY, Calif. – The Wildcats beat California in a five-set thriller to improve to 15-13 on the season.
Jaelyn Hodge led Arizona with 16 kills and
Sofia Maldonado Diaz followed with 15 kills. The Wildcats tallied a season best 19.5 blocks, led by
Zyonna Fellows with a career high 14 blocks. Arizona also served a season high 13 aces.
Arizona won Set 1, 25-13. The Cats hit .429 in the set, led by
Dilara Gedikoglu with four kills. Maldonado Diaz and
Emery Herman had two kills each. Arizona had 2.5 blocks to hold Cal to a .148 hitting percentage.
Cal took the second set, 26-24, to tie the match.
Alayna Johnson, Gedikoglu, and Maldonado Diaz had three kills each. The Golden Bears had six blocks in the set to hold Arizona to a .116 hitting percentage.
The Golden Bears took the third set, 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Hodge had five kills, but Cal was able to edge out Arizona to take a 2-1 lead in the match
The Cats won the fourth set, 25-14, to force a fifth set. Maldonado Diaz led the attack with seven kills and Hodge had six kills. Fellows held Cal's offense at bay with four blocks.
Arizona won the fifth set, 15-9, to secure the match win.
Puk Stubbe had three kills in the set and
Kamaile Hiapo served an ace at match point to lead the Cats to the win.
The Wildcats will face No. 8 Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. MST.
