Tucson, Ariz. - The Arizona Wildcats won their first match back home against the University of San Diego 5-2. Despite the wind and USD winning the doubles point, the Cats walked away with five singles points.

Senior captain Jonas Ziverts battled and defeated the No. 1 ranked singles player August Holmgren in three sets. Ziverts started the third set with a 4-1 lead then broke Holmgren at 5-4 to win the match. 

No. 53 Herman Hoeyeraal tied the match 1-1 after taking the first point for the Cats. He won 6-4, 7-6 (5) against Alex Stater. Carlos Hassey took the second singles point after beating Will Davies 6-3, 7-6 (7). Gustaf Strom followed suit shortly after, defeating Gui Osorio 6-2, 7-5. 

Arizona dropped the doubles point after Jett Middleton and Filip Malbasic lost 6-2 to Davies and liro Vasa. Coming off the court second, Holmgren and Osorio won 6-3 against Ziverts and Hoeyeraal. Colton Smith and Hassey were the last pair on the court after they beat No. 84 Marvin Schaber and David Norfeldt 5-3. 

The team is now 6-2 and ranked at No. 16. The Wildcats host a double-header on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, against NM State at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. After that another double-header at home against NAU on Feb. 12, 2022.
