Student Athletes of the Month Named for February

TUCSON, Ariz. – C.A.T.S. Academics has announced that Jaydin Young (Football), Reed Schaefer (Baseball), Anna Gret Asi (Women's Basketball) and Midori Castillo-Meza (Women's Tennis) have been selected as the Student Athletes of the Month for February.
These students were recognized for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth. They were chosen as Student Athletes of the Month by the C.A.T.S. Academic staff.
Young is a second-year safety from Peoria, Ariz., pursuing a degree in General Studies. In the 2021 football season, he tallied the sixth-most tackles on the team with 44 total. He played a key role in Arizona's defense that allowed an average of 190.1 passing yards per game –– the program's lowest passing YPG since 2008. His highlighting performance was against USC where he recorded 11 tackles and one pass breakup.
"Jaydin had a challenging fall semester balancing the season and academics," said counselor Corey Talley. "But since the start of the spring semester he has been firing on all cylinders. He is setting himself up for a great semester GPA and will look to carry that momentum into next Fall."
Schaefer is a freshman pitcher from Las Vegas, Nev., majoring in Mathematics. He comes to Arizona from Desert Oasis High School where he lettered four years in baseball and was ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 1 left-handed pitcher in Nevada in the 2021 class. He was also a Perfect Game preseason All-American in 2020 and 2021.
"Reed is a student athlete who has excelled in the classroom and has done a great job managing school and baseball in a very challenging major of Mathematics with an emphasis in Economics and Business," said counselor Jenn Mewes.
Asi is a freshman guard from Tartu, Estonia, studying Applied Humanities. In her debut season as a Wildcat, she made appearances in seven games. Against CSU Northridge, Asi put up her season-high five points and two assists in the Wildcats' ultimate 87-44 win. She also logged three steals in the team's win against Rutgers.
"Anna Gret has been killing it academically," said counselor Taja Dotson. "She had a perfect semester GPA for Fall 2021 and has been doing an amazing job so far for Spring 2022. She always receives positive reports back from her Learning Specialist every week and is always prepared for her academic sessions. She has been a pleasure to work with and always has the best attitude and remains positive despite outside factors. I am extremely proud of her and her transition into college as an International student coming from Estonia."
Castillo-Meza is a freshman from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico studying Pre-Business. So far in her collegiate debut season, she has clinched doubles points against teams including Oregon, Washington State, GCU and Western Michigan. She also won her respective matches against Washington, Alabama, San Jose State and NAU.
"She had a hard fall semester, but is off to a great start in the spring," said counselor Elle McAlister. "She is killing it in her academics and has really turned her grades around."
