CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Arizona Wildcats (37-24) dropped a back-and-forth battle, 7-4, to the Ole Miss Rebels (33-22) on Saturday night at the NCAA Coral Gables Regional.
Left fielder
Chase Davis and
Garen Caulfield both swatted opposite-field solo home runs in the bottom of the second inning to give Arizona an early lead.
Following a game-tying two-run home run by the Rebels in the fourth, third baseman
Tony Bullard retook the lead for Arizona with a two-run double to left-center field. Ole Miss went on to plate three in the eighth to take the lead for good, creating the final margin of 7-4.
Arizona starting pitcher
Garrett Irvin was solid for the Wildcats, going 6.2 innings and striking out nine. The southpaw allowed four runs on eight hits without issuing any walks and did not factor into the decision.
The Wildcats now face an elimination game against the Canisius Golden Griffins on Sunday morning in Coral Gables. First pitch from Alex Rodriguez Park is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. MST.
