TUCSON, Ariz. - The student-athletes for the month of September have been announced by C.A.T.S. Academics and the honorees include Tacario Davis (Football), Ana Heath (Volleyball), Michael Ogbeiwi (Men's Track & Field) and Taylen Wise (Women's Track & Field).
These students were recognized for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth. They were chosen as Student Athletes of the Summer by the C.A.T.S. Academic staff.
Davis is a sophomore cornerback from Long Beach, Calif., on the football team that has made an impact on the field this season. He has 12 tackles through the first five games to go with four pass breakups and also returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown against NAU earlier this season.
"Tacario is really motivated this semester and it shows," said counselor Mary Hartman. "He prioritizes and works ahead on his weekly assignments, is organized in his day-to-day schedule and has become a more independent learner. Tacario seeks out the resources he needs to be successful, and we are really proud of all of his hard work and dedication to academics."
Heath is from Murphy, Texas and a sophomore setter on the volleyball team with over 500 assists this season and is the team leader in service aces with 18. She is also averaging 2.62 digs per set and has 20 blocks.
"Ana is a Nutritional Science major, and she has excelled in her classes during her time at the University of Arizona," said counselor Michelle Galambos. "The courses she takes are very challenging and she continually strives for high-quality work in everything she does in the classroom."
Ogbeiwi is a redshirt freshman from Surrey, B.C. and is a thrower on the men's track and field team. Prior to redshirting last year with the Wildcats, he was ranked as the No. 3 thrower in the world at the U18 level.
"Michael has shown tremendous growth over the past year in academics," said counselor Jordon Smith, "and has been a role model for others on the team. When faced with adversity, Michael has shown great maturity in and out of the classroom and has been uplifting to his peers and teammates."
Wise is a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, who competed in the 100m hurdles as well as the triple jump and long jump during her freshman season. She placed ninth in the hurdles at the Pac-12 Championships and was also ninth in the triple jump.
"Taylen has shown growth in her academic development and has taken proactive steps to continue her success," said counselor Kendrick Johnson. "I am proud of how she has taken charge of her classwork and education as she strives to be ahead and has shown that she is taking the necessary steps to improve her quality of work in all of her classes."
