Arizona Opens Pac-12 Play with Sweep of California

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (12-3, 3-0) polished off a series sweep of the California Golden Bears (8-6, 0-3) with a 10-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.

The Wildcats put together their second straight comeback effort to earn the sweep, twice rallying to tie the game before taking the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double from Nik McClaughry.

The Arizona bats continued their hot hitting that has driven the current nine-game hit streak, plating double-digit runs for the sixth time during the streak. Seven of the Wildcats nine starters recorded a base hit, with Mac Bingham (3-for-5) and Kiko Romero (2-for-3) leading the way.

Starting pitcher Aiden May (2-0) turned in his best outing of the year, going six innings and allowing just three runs while striking out eight; the quality start earned him the win. His eight strikeouts were a Division I career high, and landed just one shy of his collegiate high-water mark of nine last season with Pima CC.

Right-handers Derek Drees, Dawson Netz, and Trevor Long all logged scoreless relief appearances to mostly cover the final three innings.
