TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona forward
Azuolas Tubelis is officially a consensus Second Team All-American after receiving the honors from the NABC, USBWA, The Sporting News and the Associated Press last week.
Tubelis is the 13th Wildcat to be named a consensus All-American and it's the 14th time overall that an Arizona player has been recognized with Sean Elliott earning the distinction twice in his career.
After
Bennedict Mathurin was named a consensus second team honoree last year, it is just the third time in Arizona history that the Wildcats have had different players earn consensus All-American honors in back-to-back seasons. Khalid Reeves (1994) and Damon Stoudamire (1995) were first and were followed by Mike Bibby (1998), Miles Simon (1998) and Jason Terry (1999). A complete list of Arizona's consensus All-Americans is at the bottom of this release.
Tubelis was a First Team All Pac-12 honoree for the second straight season and it marked the third time he received all-conference accolades after garnering honorable mention status as a freshman. He is the 16th player in Arizona history to receive all-conference honors three times in his career, dating back to Marion Coltrin and Lorry DiGrazia in 1936, 1937 and 1938 in the Border Conference.
The Lithuanian averaged 19.8 points and 9.1 rebounds to lead the Pac-12 in both categories and become the seventh player in the history of the conference to accomplish that. He had 14 double-doubles on the season – 12 in conference play – and added a 40-point effort against Oregon. He made a total of 274 field goals on the season, the third-most in a single season in Arizona history and his 694 points are the sixth-most in a season in UA lore. In the championship game of the Pac-12 Tournament against UCLA, he registered 19 points and 14 rebounds to help the Wildcats win their second straight title.
