TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Track and Field senior
Jordan Geist was named the Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Year, as announced by the conference on Friday. Geist has had a dominant outdoor season competing in both the shot put and hammer throw. At the Pac-12 Championships last weekend, Geist won both events, earning his fifth and sixth Pac-12 Titles.
Geist's six Pac-12 titles are tied for the most ever in conference history. Additionally, with his shot put victory at the championships, Geist earned his fourth title in the event, which is the most ever by a man in Pac-12 history. At the conference championships, he became just the second man and fourth person overall to win Pac-12 titles in the three throwing events of the shot put, discus, and hammer throw over the course of his collegiate career. His winning mark in the hammer throw of 73.82m (242-2) was the best in the event at the conference championships since 1996. Furthermore, Geist ranks fifth all-time in Pac-12 history in the shot put and sixth all-time in the hammer throw. Geist is now a three-time Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Year (2023, 2021, 2019) and was also named the 2018 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. All of these accomplishments have helped him become one of the most decorated throwers in Pac-12 history.
The senior and Pennsylvania native's dominant final outdoor season as a Wildcat started right away, as he began the season by setting the Arizona school record in the hammer throw at the Island Relays in the Bahamas. He would then go on to break that record a couple of weeks later at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson with a heave of 74.14m (243-3). He has three hammer throw victories on the year (including the Pac-12 Championships), along with another second and third place finish as well.
What's even more impressive is that the hammer throw is Geist's secondary event, with the shot put being his primary. His victory at the Pac-12 Championships kept him undefeated on the season, as he has not lost the event to another collegiate thrower in the four meets he's competed in the event at. Before the conference championship weekend, Geist traveled back to his home state to compete at the Penn Relays, where he won the shot put and set the meet record in the event of 20.92m (68-7.75). He holds both the collegiate and high school records in the event at the Penn Relays. His season best mark in the event on the year is 21.25m (69-9.75), which came at the Mt. SAC Relays. He also holds the school record in the event which he set with a heave of 21.59m (70-10) in 2019.
Geist transitioned into the outdoor season after winning the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. He was named a First Team All-American, the USTFCCCA West Region Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, and also set the Arizona school record in the indoor shot over the course of the season.
Most recently, Geist was included on the Men's Post-Outdoor Conference Championships The Bowerman Watch List. The Bowerman is the most prestigious award in all of collegiate track and field and is awarded annually at the end of the outdoor season to one male and one female athlete.
After adding yet another accolade with the 2023 Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Year to his long list of them, Geist will now turn his attention to the NCAA West First Round Championships, where he will compete in both the shot put and the hammer throw next weekend on May 24-27. The top 12 competitors in each event at the First Round will then qualify for the final NCAA Championships on June 7-10. He will enter the weekend ranked second in both of his events as he looks to further expand his accomplishments with an outdoor championship title.
