Danny Gonzales and Chip Viney Join Coach Brennan’s Staff

TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona Head Football Coach Brent Brennan today has announced the addition of Danny Gonzales as Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach and Chip Viney as Cornerbacks Coach.

Below is a comprehensive list of the latest two additions to the Arizona Football coaching staff.

Danny Gonzales – Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach

Gonzales brings 151 career wins as a coach to the Wildcats since entering the coaching world as a graduate assistant with New Mexico in 1999. He spent the last four years as head coach of New Mexico and has appeared in a bowl game in 14 of the last 17 seasons.

He joined his mentor and former coach Rocky Long as Lobo football players returned to coach at their alma mater.

In 2022 under Gonzales, New Mexico lowered its total defense yards per game allowed, and the program cut 125.5 yards per game off the total prior to Gonzales arrival. The season prior UNM had a top-30 passing defense, with the Lobos allowing just 202.8 yards per game through the air, finishing No. 30 in the nation after inheriting one of the worst pass-defensive teams in the nation in 2019.

Gonzales helped New Mexico finish in the top 50 in total defense in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2007-08. The Lobo defense finished in the top 35 in third-down defense and in the top 25 in defensive first downs allowed during the 2022 season.

Safety A.J. Haulcy earned Freshman All-American giving the Lobos their first All-American since 2014. New Mexico had eight players selected All-Mountain West, tying for the most in the past 10 seasons, and three Second-Team All-Mountain West selections, the second most in the last 10 years.

Gonzales has degrees from The University of New Mexico, earning his bachelor's degree in business administration and general management in 1998 and a master's degree in physical education and recreation in 2002.

Chip Viney – Cornerbacks Coach

Viney joins the Wildcats after serving the last two seasons with San Jose State as the Cornerbacks Coach. In 2023, the Spartans finished second in the Mountain West in total defense, and first in pass defense including 12 interceptions which tied for second in the conference. SJSU allowed a conference-low 183.00 yards through the air.

In 2022, his defensive backs combined for nine interceptions and helped the Spartans achieve a Mountain West best +12 turnover margin in the regular season.

Viney had various roles with Oklahoma football over two tenures. The most recent stint was from 2018 through 2021 when he served in recruiting and team defense analyst roles. For the 2021 season, he was the director of player development and scouting analyst.

The Fresno, Calif., native also spent 2013 through 2016 at Oklahoma as a graduate assistant working with cornerbacks his first three seasons and was the Sooners' 2016 special teams analyst.

In his eight seasons with Oklahoma football, the Sooners won five Big 12 Conference championships and participated in the 2018 and 2019 College Football Playoffs, and the 2013 Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

In between his two tenures at Oklahoma, Viney was coaching cornerbacks at the University of Nevada in 2017.

He earned letter awards for the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Bruin teams and was named its scout team player of the year as a freshman. Viney completed his college career at New Mexico State in 2011. He then played one season of Arena Football for the 2012 San Jose SaberCats.
