TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (9-10) used an early offensive surge, strong pitching, and flawless defense to earn a 6-4 victory over the visiting Grand Canyon Antelopes (11-9) on Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field.
Arizona scored four in the first inning after hitting for the cycle as a team.
Mason White's two-run triple opened the scoring and
Tommy Splaine followed three batters later with a two-run home run to left field.
The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth after Grand Canyon responded with one run in each of the second and fourth.
Richie Morales drove in a run with an opposite field single and a GCU fielding error brought in Arizona's sixth and final run.
The Antelopes pushed across singular runs in the sixth and eighth innings but the Wildcats bullpen held on for the win. Right-handers
Kyler Heyne (1-0) and
Casey Hintz both notched scoreless relief efforts, with the former picking up his first win of the year and the latter slamming the door shut in the ninth for his second save.
Starting pitcher Anthony Susac was strong, limiting the Lopes to one run over 2.2 innings while striking out a pair; he did not factor into the decision.
