TUCSON, Ariz. — A walk-off two-run home run from
Brendan Summerhill gifted the Arizona Wildcats (11-13, 5-5) a 5-3 series-opening victory over the visiting UCLA Bruins (10-13, 4-6) on Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field.
Arizona rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, courtesy of a solo home run from second baseman
Garen Caulfield that cleared the left-center field wall. The Wildcats rally started with a two-run bottom of the fourth that included a sacrifice fly from
Emilio Corona and an RBI single off the bat of
Tommy Splaine.
Leadoff hitter and third baseman
Richie Morales kicked off the 10th inning rally with a single up the middle, his second hit of the night. Three batters later, with Morales still at first and two outs, Summerhill turned on a pitch and sent it 416 feet onto the roof of the Terry Francona Hitting Center for the win.
Wildcats starting pitcher
Jackson Kent was once again in command on the mound, working 5.2 innings and limiting the Bruins to three runs (two earned) on six hits. The left-hander struck out seven and did not factor into the decision.
Arizona's bullpen was lights out, keeping UCLA off the scoreboard over the final 4.1 innings while the Wildcat hitters worked their magic. Right-hander
Casey Hintz (1-1) earned his first win of the year after working the final two innings.
